Firefighters may have forced change in strategy

If Moxie Media couldn’t get everyone involved in its coalition of clients to agree to tap the PAC known as 2nd Defense for attack ads on Sen. Jean Berkey, then which groups were against the idea?

At least part of the pushback came from firefighters, according to the Washington State Council of Firefighters.

The council was never on board with sending money to defeat Berkey, said Greg Markley, secretary-treasurer of the labor group, which has supported Berkey in the past.

Sometime in August, firefighters found out money from 2nd Defense was slated to go to pay for the pieces against Berkey, and told Moxie Media “we’re not interested in that,” Markley said.

The largest contributors to 2nd Defense, formed to help defend 2nd District state Rep. Tom Campbell from a challenge by J.T. Wilcox, are the PACs associated with the Council of Firefighters, the State Labor Council and the Washington Federation of State Employees, plus a group called Forward PAC funded mostly by unions and lawyers’ groups.
