Check out the latest addition to SoundInfo, our collection of news apps and interactive resources: A map showing red light and school zone enforcement cameras in South Sound.

The map visualizes the proliferation of photo enforced traffic zones we’ve been reporting for the last several years as they’ve gone live in Lakewood, Tacoma, Auburn, Puyallup, Fife, Federal Way and Lacey. City officials justify them as a low-cost way to improve traffic safety. But critics see them as intrusive cash cows – the high-tech version of a speed trap. Tim Eyman is supporting a local initiative to limit their use in Mukilteo, which could be ground-zero for a statewide backlash against traffic cameras.
