Roof peeled back on Sprinker: county awaits report assessing extent of wear and tear

Contractors pulled back sections of Sprinker Recreation Center’s ailing roof on Wednesday to find out whether there’s structural damage underneath.

They hope to have an engineering report within days, Deputy County Executive Kevin Phelps told the County Council on Tuesday.

“We’ll know after that if there are structural problems,” he said.

County officials know the roof is corroded, and they’re hoping they can replace it without having to deal with structural problems in the building.

The existence of structural issues “is the least likely scenario,” Phelps said.

The county intends to spend roughly $6 million in improvements on the 34-year-old recreational building at Sprinker. It contains a popular ice arena, tennis courts and other recreational facilities.

County officials abandoned a much more ambitious plan for a major renovation that could have cost $34 million dollars in favor of scaled down fixes. That will allow the work to get done more quickly.

“If it’s a go,” Phelps said of the soon-to-come engineering report, “we’ll start developing plans and working on a schedule to get bids” for the work, Phelps said.

SCALED DOWN FIXES? This is why the roof is in the condition it is in. I inspected the roof over the facility over 6 years ago and based on my 30+ years of experience, in the roofing industry, deemed it un-repairable. Structural concerns were present when I first inspected the roof and I reccomended, at that time, that they replace the roof immediately so as to avoid any potential for further structure demise. The county decided to NOT listen back then; so you can blame this one on neglect. I will be nothing but shocked if any roofing consultant or engineer gives this thing anything more than a death warrant. The again nothing in Pierce County shocks me any more.

  3. It’s this short term thinking that’s put Sprinker in this mess in the first place. What, you think the money is going to magically show up later. Sprinker is an integral part of the Parkland/Spanaway culture bringing people…and their money into our neighborhood businesses. It needs to be valued as such.

  4. Uh..should the assessment be done BEFORE you dedicate 6.1 Million to a project?..i would think so..that just leaves room for more unnecessary money aside from the 6.1 million being wasted, to be used..so it went from 34 mil to 6.1 Mil…and now..with this new undone assessment..I would say they will come back and say..estimate is now at 8-10 million needed..

Tacoma News needs to interview MikeBinUP!! immediately. I think this will uncover a lot and alert the public on county supervision mismanagement.

What was the bid for demolition?

  7. Bionic_ben23 says:

FIX IT NOW. Otherwise, I WILL continue to believe that our tax money is being used to deepen the pockets of the people voted into office. In this economy, this should be one of the easy choice fixes. Just like in Steilacoom off of Martin St, politicians are the ones deciding to not do this unless really nessessary.>…
You waste money, of the tax payers, to do these unnessessary assessments.

If you want to replace a building and need a reason, let the roof fail. Wait a short while and mother nature will do the rest.
I would like to know, why was the roof NOT maintained.
