The state Democratic convention is underway. Democrats expect 1,000 party members to converge on Vancouver, Wash., this weekend.
On Saturday, the state party plans to officially nominate Denny Heck for the open seat in the 3rd Congressional District, chairman Dwight Pelz said.
Clyde Cordero, challenging the GOP’s U.S. Rep. Cathy McMorris Rogers, is also expected to win a nomination, Pelz said. Other candidates for Congress were nominated back in January.
There are other Democrats running in both races, including Cheryl Crist in the 3rd, and they’ll have the opportunity to make their cases to the 3rd District delegation caucus before it recommends a candidate to the full convention. But “We expect the caucus to overwhelmingly recommend Heck,” Pelz said.
Only nominated candidates can address the full convention on Saturday.
Heck is a former state legislator and co-founder of TVW. Several Republicans are running for the seat being vacated by Rep. Brian Baird, most prominently Jaime Herrera and David Castillo.
