Ken Paulson, father of slain teacher, runs for Legislature

Rep. Steve Conway has an opponent in his run for state Senate. Ken Paulson will run as an independent.

Both Tacoma residents have filed to run for the seat left vacant by the retirement of Senate President Pro Tem Rosa Franklin.

Paulson, a community activist, has sought public office before, including an unsuccessful run for County Council. Since then, he’s dealt with a terrible tragedy: the shooting death of his daughter.

Jennifer Ann Paulson, a special education teacher, was shot and killed in February outside Birney Elementary School by a man who had stalked her for years. She was 30.

I couldn’t immediately reach Ken Paulson by phone today, but he told KOMO News he’s running to seek changes in state laws to protect future victims of stalking.

He wants judges to be allowed to order offenders who violate protection or anti-harassment orders to wear GPS ankle bracelets, KOMO reported.

UPDATE: Paulson said a GPS monitoring device could have saved his daughter’s life.

When someone violates a protective order by going where they’re banned, the device can notify the victim, he said. The ankle bracelet would also make noise to alert people nearby, he said.

Paulson isn’t a one-issue candidate, though. He said he’s also running to rein in spending in Olympia. The state budget has grown too fast, he said.

“The state of Washington is doing what Washington, D.C. is doing, and we can’t survive that way long-term,” he said.

  1. Ken Paulson is the better of the choices by far. He is not part of the Good Ole Boys network like Steve Conway. Steve has been in Olimpia for how long? And look at the shape the state is in. That should tell you what his future actions as a senator would be, bad and costly just like his past actions as a Rep.

  2. DO NOT VOTE FOR PAULSON! He is a community activist! Why do you think our budget is all screwed up ! It’s because we have WAY too many community activists and lawyers already in office! Do I have to remind you that they repealed the 2/3 majority vote to raise taxes that us (the constituents) voted for last year. If you vote for Paulson nothing will change. You are essentially throwing your vote away! You want change, you want a better government, you want a BALANCED budget, you want to do away with dumb taxes that go to senseless government programs that don’t help anybody? All I’m saying is think about who you are going to vote for cause they will be there for the next 4 years!
