Complaint against JT Wilcox campaign for use of dairy logo dismissed by PDC

It was a bit of a stretch to begin with, but interesting nonetheless. A Yelm woman complained to the state Public Disclosure Commission that JT Wilcox’s campaign had received something of value from a company that is hadn’t disclosed.

And what was that? The use of the well-established logo of Wilcox Family Farms. Wilcox’s campaign logo was very similar to the company’s logo. Therefore he benefited from the good will established by the company as well as the name identification built from appearing on egg cartons and advertising, the complaint alleged.

Bernice Goolsby had also complained that two Pierce County governments – South Pierce County Fire and Rescue and the Pierce County Library District – had used public resources to further a political campaign. That was based on their sponsorship of an egg hunt at Wilcox Farms in Roy that she asserted was a thinly disguised campaign event.

“While it is conceivable that Mr. Wilcox might benefit in some immeasurable way as a result of goodwill he and his family business have generated, it is also conceivable that Mr. Wilcox might suffer in some immeasurable way as a result of designing in a manner that associates his candidacy with Wilcox Farms,” wrote PDC interim executive director Doug Ellis.

In both cases, the PDC found no reason to further investigate. Wilcox in a Republican candidate for state House from the 2nd District. The other candidates are incumbent Tom Campbell and Matthew Hamilton
