The double-digit list of Republicans wanting to take on U.S. Sen. Patty Murray is being winnowed down now that Dino Rossi has entered the race.

Art Coday announced today he has dropped out to endorse fellow Republican Rossi.

The medical doctor, who handles mostly Medicaid and Medicare patients, built his campaign with criticism of the federal health care bill and calls for more limited government, endearing himself to some conservatives. He spoke at tea party rallies and sounded like one of several potential threats to Rossi from the right.

But he said today “the stakes are too high” to miss the opportunity to defeat Murray. He immediately announced his candidacy for a different job, an open state House seat in the 32nd District, where Democratic Rep. Maralyn Chase has stepped aside to run for Senate.

The Spokesman-Review reported Wednesday that another candidate, Orting plumber Ed Torres, was throwing his support to Rossi.

Here’s Coday’s full release:

From Dr. Art Coday – May 28, 2010 (11:15 am)

In my campaign for the U.S. Senate, my primary goal has always been the defeat of three-term incumbent Senator Patty Murray. Senator Murray has closely identified herself with the very extreme policies of President Obama and the Democratic Party – massive spending, expansion of government, and intervention into the private sector.

In 2010, Senator Murray is more vulnerable than ever.  We can’t afford to miss this rare opportunity – the stakes are too high.  With high regard and admiration for all the other U.S. Senate candidates, it is clear to me that Dino Rossi has the best chance to defeat Senator Murray, so I am suspending my campaign and enthusiastically endorsing Dino Rossi for U.S. Senate.

Mr. Rossi will be a capable, principled senator who believes in America, its Constitution, its people and their unalienable rights, and the traditional values that have made America great.  His experience in business and in the Washington State Senate, where he helped to balance the budget in a time of great need, will be valuable experience as he tackles America’s fiscal crisis in the United States Senate.  Importantly, his life experience and faith have given him a measure of humility and wisdom which are so greatly needed in public service.

I’ve been supporting Dino Rossi since 2004, when I worked hard to get him elected as Governor of Washington.  We know how that election turned out, and I fought hard – in the State Supreme Court and U.S. Supreme Court – because I support your right to vote, and I support Dino Rossi.

I’m also announcing today my candidacy for the open State Representative position in the 32nd Legislative District.

The average American is hurting, and in the midst of that suffering, we have a government that is saddling us with unprecedented debt – we’re getting to a point where it is no longer merely objectionable, but a threat to our economic survival.

The voters of the 32nd Legislative District – like the voters throughout this state and all over America – are facing enormous challenges.

My campaign for state representative will present unmistakably common sense solutions to the issues troubling the people of the 32nd Legislative District – our children’s education, transportation gridlock, and public safety.

Healthcare insurance policy properly belongs at the state level, and my life and work experience equips me to offer solutions that will lower costs, improve the quality of care, increase competition, reduce bureaucracy, and put control back where it belongs – with patients, their families, and their doctor.

Instead of soaring unemployment, we need economic growth in the state of Washington.  I will campaign for lower tax rates, respect for property rights, and an improved business climate.  I am opposed to a state income tax.

Outstanding people supported me in my U.S. Senate campaign.  I’ve come into contact with many thousands of individuals through meetings and forums, and through television, radio, Facebook, and Twitter. My campaign team, volunteers, endorsers, and donors have been amazing – energetic, vigorous, and capable.

I urge all my supporters to support my campaign for State Representative in the 32nd Legislative District and to join me in endorsing Dino Rossi for U.S. Senate.
