Hans Zeiger will challenge incumbent Democratic Rep. Dawn Morrell in this year’s election. Zeiger, a Republican who lives in Edgewood, is one of two GOP challengers. The other is Steven Vermillion.

Zeiger said he has already doorbelled 3,000 homes in the 25th District.

“I’m hearing from a lot of people in our community who are concerned about the priorities of government,” Zeiger said. “My goals are simple: we need jobs, tax relief, and educational excellence.”

In 2004, as a sophomore at Hillsdale College in Michigan, Zeiger was among 10 finalists in an MTV contest to address to Republican National Convention. He wasn’t the winner but attended the convention in New York City.

Here’s his press announcement:

Author and community volunteer Hans Zeiger of Edgewood is challenging Rep. Dawn Morrell (D-Puyallup) for her 25th District seat in the Washington State House of Representatives this year.

Zeiger, a Republican, has already doorbelled around 3,000 homes. “I’m hearing from a lot of people in our community who are concerned about the priorities of government,” Zeiger said. “My goals are simple: we need jobs, tax relief, and educational excellence. Like many people in the 25th
District, I’m disappointed that Rep. Morrell voted to raise our taxes last week.”

Zeiger’s roots in the Puyallup area run deep. “I’m proud to be the son, grandson, and great grandson of Puyallup teachers,” he said. “This community taught me the values of education, work, and public service.”

Zeiger’s campaign has received over $35,000 in backing, and he was the first candidate in the state to receive the endorsement of the Mainstream Republicans of Washington for the 2010 election cycle. He is endorsed by
Rep. Bruce Dammeier (R-Puyallup), Pierce County councilmember Joyce McDonald, and former 25th District Rep. Dave Morell.

Zeiger pledges that he’ll listen to people across party lines. “I’m part of a new generation of voters who want to move beyond the divided politics that we’ve grown up with. We need to find common ground on the issues that
matter to our community.”

Zeiger graduated from Puyallup High School. In 2004, the News Tribune called him a “rising political star.” He earned a BA in American Studies from Hillsdale College and a Master’s degree in Public Policy from Pepperdine University.

In his work as an author and non-profit senior fellow, Hans calls the younger generation to celebrate the values of community. In 2002, Hans served on the Puyallup Veteran’s Memorial Dedication Committee, and in 2007 he began a project to document the stories of Puyallup’s World War II
veterans. In 2008 and 2009, Hans wrote a monthly column about hometown heroes in the Puyallup Herald, and he is a member of the Ezra Meeker Historical Society, South Hill Historical Society, and Fife Historical Society.

Hans has been active as a volunteer leader in Boy Scout Troop 174 for seven years. He serves on the Puyallup/Sumner Chamber of Commerce Government Affairs Committee, volunteers for the Puyallup Fair Foundation’s history program, and he is a member of the Cascade Land Conservancy.

The 25th District covers Puyallup, South Hill, Summit, Midland, and parts of Fife, Milton, and Edgewood. For more information on Hans Zeiger, visit www.hanszeiger.com.
