The budget out today slates a juvenile detention center in Grand Mound for closure.

The Juvenile Rehabilitation Administration would have to close Maple Lane School by mid-2013.

Inmates would be moved to other facilities. According to a summary of the operating budget (now online – read it here) the capital budget that is also out today provides for borrowing more than $16 million to create new space for the displaced youth.

The general fund will save $5.8 million through the Maple Lane closure, according to the budget summary.

UPDATE: The closure is supposed to be accomplished in phases, with the facility scaling back to 70 percent of capacity over the next year, then shrinking to 40 percent, then 20 percent, before closing altogether by June 2013.

Word is, though, that there may be a floor amendment to keep Maple Lane open.
