Murray extras: Doctor shortage, McKenna, Rossi, etc.

U.S. Sen. Patty Murray outlined several reasons yesterday for getting behind national health reforms that even she says are not perfect. The third-term Democrat, who faces an election challenge from a dozen Republican or Independent candidates, had a lot of other things to say in her meeting yesterday with The Olympian’s editorial board.

Update on costs of special session

The special legislative session looks to extend close to the maximum length of 30 days, even if lawmakers meet a goal of reaching a budget deal today and Friday. Under that scenario, they would return a week later after the paperwork is done, taking votes through next weekend.

Under original estimates for the cost of session, 30 extra days would have cost the state more than $500,000. But it will be far less because of the slow pace of work — only key negotiators have been in Olympia — and rejection by many lawmakers of their daily stipends.
