Funny what a little plug from Glenn Beck will do. University of Washington Tacoma professor Mike Allen’s “A Patriot’s History of the United States” just hit No. 1 on the New York Times paperback non-fiction bestseller list. Allen and coauthor Larry Schweikart published the book in 2004 as a conservative answer to “A People’s History of the United States.” It was revised in 2007, but really took off recently after Beck talked about it on his show.

“At my age, at this stage of my career, it’s quite a pleasant surprise,” Allen said in a UWT press release.

  1. derekyoung says:

I honestly fear for our country. Why do we treat revisionists as though their version of history is equally valid?

  2. wasn’t the conservative answer to ‘a peoples history’ what we had to begin with? You know dead white guy history? so lame.

  3. derekyoung – Did you read the book? I did, cover to cover (its signed :p). You must therefore be referring to the People’s History as revisionist? As far as your fear for ‘our country’… i would fear a nation full of citizens who accepted only 1 source of information as valid. The plethora of sources cited in “Patriots History” are reputable and widely used in ‘non-conservative’ works. The prose is amazing, and the detail impeccable. The text engages and challenges even the uninterested history reader.

  4. NineInchNachosll – What is more ‘lame’… Assuming you know about a book before reading it, or labeling it because one of the authors is conservative? These are equal opportunity historical stories, plenty of dead guys & gals period.

  5. Maybe we just don’t get the appeal of a book about new england football teams eh? Good grief.
