The Yakima Herald-Republic has a story this morning about a Prosser school teacher who wants to take on U.S. Rep. Richard “Doc” Hastings from the right.

Here is how the H-R described Mary Ruth Edwards:

Edwards is a former Marine and a single mother of two, who advises the drama department at Prosser High School along with her job teaching at Whitstran Elementary School. In 2009 she founded a local group within the 912 Project — the grass-roots movement led by conservative commentator Glenn Beck. She is running on a platform of state sovereignty and strict constitutionalism.

A Democrat has already entered the race. That would be Jay Clough, who announced in November that he was running. Hastings has represented the 4th Congressional District since defeating Democrat Jay Inslee in 1994. Inslee moved west and won election to Congress from the 1st District in 1998.

In a top-two primary, the two candidates with the most votes advance to the general election.
