Former University Place City Councilman Stan Flemming has told friends he will run for the Pierce County Council this year.

Flemming will run for the District 7 seat being vacated by Terry Lee, R-Gig Harbor, who cannot run again because of term limits.

Flemming, a medical doctor, spent 15 years on the University Place council and was the city’s first mayor. He also is a former state representative serving the 28th District.

Below is the e-mail he sent this morning announcing his candidacy for County Council.

Dear Friends and Family;

The purpose of this email is to inform you of my decision to seek election to the District 7 County Council position currently held by Councilmember Terry Lee.

As all of you know my decision to step down from my City Council position after serving fifteen years as the founding Mayor of our city, Mayor Pro Tem, and as a councilmember did not come lightly.  It was time for new thinking and an infusion of new blood to help move our great community to a higher level.  During my tenure, we built safer streets, developed a highly responsive public safety program, expanded our parks, and I actively listened to the needs and concerns of my constituents and acted on them.  My departure did not signal that I was through with public service to the community, people, and state that I love.

After speaking with many of you over the past several weeks, it has become clear to me that I do have calling to continue serving.  The challenges facing our county are as great as they have ever been as we work to recover from this current recession.  Some of the key issues facing us to which I am absolutely committed to addressing are sewer service to residential areas in University Place; managing our shorelines in a responsible manner while preserving the rights of the property owners who live along our shores; and balancing the needs and challenges of a county airport with the needs and requirements of preserving the serenity of the surrounding neighborhoods are just a few of the challenges and opportunities facing us for the next several years.  Additionally, it will be very important that we continue  resourcing services in the areas of public safety and community health in light of decrease revenues and the requirement to have a balanced budget.  It is imperative that we continue strong leadership at that level and I believe that I am that candidate.

Councilmember Terry Lee has provided that leadership for two successful terms, however, will be vacating his seat under term-limits come this Fall.  As a city councilmember, I earned your trust and confidence to lead our city.  As a candidate for this position, I hope that I can continue to count on your support at the county level as we enter into this election cycle.

I will shortly be establishing a web site and a means by which you can share with me your issues, concerns, and ways you can support my campaign.  In the interim, please feel free to contact me anytime either via email at stanflemming@hotmail.com or by calling me at 253.564.6675. Finally, it is important to get the word out.  Please – share this message with all of your family and friends.  Thank you!

I look forward to hearing from you.
