Tacoma City Council vacancies: The appointment process defined

The Tacoma City Clerk’s office provided more details today about the ongoing process to appoint replacements to two vacant council positions.

City of TacomaEarlier this month, at least 40 candidates, vying to fill out the remaining terms of two at-large council seats, gave presentations to sitting city council-members about their qualifications and reasons for seeking the appointments. Although the current council kicked off the appointment process, next year’s newly configured council, which includes three newly elected members, will actually make the selections to fill the vacancies.

Here’s the new timeline for the rest of the process for the appointment of the At‑Large Position No. 7 and At‑Large Position No. 8 City Council vacancies , as provided by the city today:

Wednesday, January 6, 2010

Time: 12:00 noon to 3:00 p.m.

Place: Tacoma Municipal Building North,
733 Market Street
Room 16
Council will hold a special meeting to discuss candidate qualifications in executive session*, to be followed by an open meeting to select candidates to interview.

Letters will be sent to all candidates regarding the results of the meeting.

Tuesday, January 12, 2010

Time: 12:00 noon to 3:00 p.m.

Place: Tacoma Municipal Building
747 Market Street
Council Chambers
Council will interview selected candidates during study session.

Thursday, January 14, 2010

Time: 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.

Place: Tacoma Municipal Building
747 Market Street
Council Chambers (open session) Room 148 (executive session)
Council will hold a special meeting to discuss qualifications of the selected candidates in executive session*, to be followed by an open meeting to select appointees to serve on the City Council. Executive sessions are not open to the public.

Letters will be sent to the selected candidates regarding the results of the meeting.

Time: 5:00 p.m.

Place: Tacoma Municipal Building
747 Market Street
Council Chambers
Council will select appointees during the regular business meeting if appointments are not made at the special meeting on
January 14, 2010.

    Another example of “Open Government” in Tacoma.

    What’s the deal with the “Executive session bullsugar??? EVERY bit of this selection process should be in the open and available to public scrutiny. The only exception should be for discussions of a candidates personal or financial information.
