Former Tacoma city manager Ray Corpuz continues to be the center of controversy in his job managing the town of Seaside, Calif. According to a story on the Montery Herald’s Web site today, his city council is standing behind him despite calls for his firing. Residents object to Corpuz’s suspension of the city’s police chief, and are also dredging up his troubles in Tacoma.

“How could you hire a city manager with such questionable history?” said (resident) Andrea Meck. “What were you thinking then and what are you thinking now?”

The controversy that surrounded Corpuz in Tacoma, Wash., the city where he worked before coming to Seaside, has been one of the subjects of residents’ complaints against Corpuz. In response, the councilmen have said Corpuz’s past does not have any relevance to his current performance.

Corpuz was fired as Tacoma city manager in 2003 in the aftermath of the David Brame episode. Corpuz was blamed for promoting and standing by the late police chief despite warning signs leading up to the murder of his estranged wife, Crystal Judson.
