Tacoma Mayor: Strickland’s lead widens, Merritt’s chances fade

Councilwoman Marilyn Strickland’s lead widened further in the latest ballot counts today in the race for Tacoma mayor.

She’s now up by 723 votes — that’s 354 more (almost double) her 369-vote margin from yesterday. Her lead is now 2.54 percentage points with 28,415 total votes counted.

Jim Merritt‘s chances of turning the tide appear to be fading, even though there are still likely thousands of votes to be counted.  In 2005, there were 39,000 ballots counted in the mayor’s race, meaning there could still be 10,000 votes or so to be counted in this year’s race.

But if, in fact, there are that many ballots out, Merritt would have to win roughly 5,400 of the votes to Strickland’s 4,600 votes to overcome the lead.

There may not be 10,000 votes left.  In the 2007 municipal elections,  which had no mayor’s race, there was only 33,000 ballots counted.

The Pierce County Auditor’s Office expects to issue its next round of ballot counts on Saturday at 5 p.m.

Here is where the race stands today:

Tacoma Mayor
NP – Jim Merritt

NP – Marilyn Strickland

I would like to know what the BIG hold up is. Now more results won’t be available until Monday at 5 pm. This is almost 1 week since the election. The currant auditor says she will leave the office better than when she came?
I for one am looking forward to Julie Anderson taking over this position. Knowing how Julie operates I can believe we would never have the mess that we have now. From the postage fiasco to the waiting game her tenture has been one large failure and she should be ashamed and owes everybody in Pierce County an apology.

are Jan Shabro and Jim Merritt cousins?

Since this item was originally posted, we’ve heard from Pierce Co. Elections Manager Lori Augino that another round of ballot counts will be released tomorrow (Sat., Nov. 7) at 5 p.m.

Under its published release schedule, the auditor’s office initially had planned to exclude weekends from ballot count releases. We’ve since updated the post to reflect the next ballot drop.

Once again the timid little town of Tacoma appears to have looked inward to its continuing desire to remain a dependent socialist mindset society of non-visionary and low achievement oriented objectives for the future!!

  5. the3rdpigshouse says:

Either the residents of Tacoma are the most ignorant electorate in the nation or Tacoma has taken counting ballots in the same way King County does!!!

  6. Hoodsportwriter says:

Hey “pig” why don’t you and your racist pal “tacky” get the h*** out of here…you both belong in Mississippi where your kind of thinking has delivered such an “outstanding” way of life (that’s irony in case you didn’t catch it)

I will be happy to keep all my city owned “socialist” utilities and enjoy the lowest power bills in the United States…idiots!

  7. stanfordspeck says:

Congratulations to Marilyn…. she will be a great mayor. Tacoma deserves and needs her leadership.

  8. pegsterdtown says:

I agree stanfordspeck. One thing about Marilyn she genuinely cares about Tacoma. She ran a clean campaign. I look forward to a Tacoma with a leader that cares.

  9. the3rdpigshouse says:

Caring without experience, common sense, and fiscal responsibility = more socialism!!

  10. pegsterdtown says:

Well pig I guess by expierence you mean an architect. I do not remember reading that being an architect means that you are qualified to be mayor. Could you please enclose the link that supports this.

  11. the3rdpigshouse says:

pegsterdtown – when you grow up and become familiar with just what management experience is, or the management of people & resources are come back and we’ll continue the discussion!!

  12. pegsterdtown says:

Pig, Just to let you know I have been a manager for over 20 years. Your comments sound like a bigots opinion to me. If you need help or advice on how to manage people and resources please contact me. I look forward to helping you.
