Shabro: `I'm leaving the office better than I found it'

I spoke with Pierce County Auditor Jan Shabro this morning. The latest returns show she's still trailing Julie Anderson in the auditor's race.

Shabro isn't ready to concede defeat. With ranked choice voting, "you don't know until all the votes are counted,"

Jan Shabro

Jan Shabro

Shabro said.

Nonetheless, she added: "Regardless of the outcome, I think I'm leaving the office better than I found it."

Shabro won the endorsement of the union representing her employees, who like the way she's handled three rounds of budget cuts in the department.

Shabro said she can sleep well at night - literally. She said she left the office after the first round of results came out last night and was asleep when I tried to reach her at about 10:30.

If Shabro looses it will be a loss to the tax payers of Pierce County. She has streamlined the office, cut waste and ultametely saved the county thousands of Dollars. It means something when the employees at the Auditors office support the incumbent. If Anderson wins you can bet that the office will again become bloated with political payoff jobs. And you wonder why the Pierce County Council decides we need to do away with a Judicial position. Dosen't make sense.

It will be a great injustice to the people of Pierce County if Jan Shabro is voted out. She has done a wonderful job as Auditor and the attacks levied against her throughout the campaign were unjust and largely untrue. The only redeeming factor in this is that the voters will be able to remove Julie Anderson once they discover that she has run the office into the ground.

Ha! (Was that at 8:01pm or 9:01pm when she left?)

(Though, who does that mean was in charge since her Deputy left as well? Elections manager? I'm sure there is a chain, but who's in charge of the count with no Auditor in those wee hours that never gets the credit?)

Ms. Shabro all I can say is: Sour Grapes! The best person went on to become our County Executive and the best person won this race.

Interesting jab at our past Auditors performance / management
Sounds like another PC dept that past officials management problems were kept under wraps.
Can't wait to see Anderson immediately address removing Auditors names from mailing and just using the title as promised.

    OPEN LETTER TO MS. SHABRO
    Dear Jan,
I believe that the voters have chosen the best candidate for the job. You did not represent your County Counsel district when they were trying to fight the LRI garbage dump and we have not forgotten how we were treated by you.
I remember one letter that I wrote to you came back with grammar corrections! How dare you!
I also noticed that you did not bother to come to the podium at the Puyallup fair when they called your name at the tea party rally.
Next time you take a trip to Mt Rainier please drive past the 304th dump with your windows rolled down (or not) you can smell it in your car. This should always be a reminder of how you represented your constituents!
Please retire- we are sick and tired of the revolving door!
    Sincerely,
    Ivote

Time will tell if Julie Anderson "walks the talk" and doesn't have her name on any mailing from the Auditor's office. I assume that will include all letterhead and envelopes, even those non-election related. Also, I guess her name won't be on the door of the office. I hope the "transparency" that she said she would bring to the office extends to her personnel decisions so the employees and their union can support her if she decides to run next year, as they did Jan Shabro. Unfortunately, the 2010 budget presumes that the new Deputy Auditor will take a furlough day a week, the Auditor's assistant will be a regular hourly employee making only out of class pay, and that the Auditor will reimburse the county for her medical benefits. All cost saving measures Shabro planned to do. If Julie doesn't do likewise, employees will be laid off and the public will have a longer wait at all of the Auditor's public service counters. The hope is that Julie can live with the 2010 budget and preserve positions, but time will tell.
