UPDATE?: Same-gender marriage in Maine? Now 50-50

It is early but we don’t have much else to do while waiting for our results. So I watch the wire for interesting results elsewhere.

Here is the first batch of numbers from Maine where voters are passing judgment on legislation legalizing same-gender marriage.

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) – Early returns show a tight contest in Maine’s closely watched referendum on whether to uphold or repeal a law allowing same-sex marriage.

With 70 of 608 precincts reporting, the gay-marriage side had 53 percent of the votes Tuesday night.

UPDATE: Now is 50-50… “Early returns showed a close contest, as forecast. With 148 of 608 precincts reporting, each side had 50 percent of the votes.”

The law at stake was passed by the Maine Legislature in May but never took effect because of a petition drive by conservatives.

A vote to uphold the law would mark the first time that the electorate in any state endorsed gay marriage. That could energize activists nationwide and blunt conservative claims that same-sex marriage is being foisted on states by judges or lawmakers over the will of the public.

However, repeal would be another heartbreaking defeat for the marriage-equality movement, following the vote against gay marriage in California a year ago.
