The governor knows him well and this position is most effective when there is a high level of trust between the governor and the person holding the job. I have worked with Jay and respect his judgment - he is both bright and thoughtful. I will be interested in seeing who will take his place at Ecology. Jay Manniing is a good choice. However that early promise has not been fulfilled. Though I can't speak specifically to the quality of the operation at DOE, both environmental regulation and Gregoire have become control freaks supporting the bankrupted downtown Seattle corporatist agenda, not business and not the public's interest in environmental protection. Gregoire’s own term as Director of Ecology was exemplary, balancing business and public interests in the pioneering days of environmental regulation.
