Union folks, Gregoire celebrate Thursday in Tacoma after collecting for food banks

Union members collected upwards of 20,000 pounds of food for local food banks as part of their month-long drive. Gov. Chris Gregoire will be the featured speaker Thursday night at the downtown Hotel Murano.

Since you’ve gotten the release on the food drive event on Thursday, we’re up to 44079 pounds of food donated to south sound food banks (the majority has been donated to EFN here in Pierce County).

The donations now amount to 75,811 pounds.
“There is a big push right now from Teamsters local 117 to completely win the competition,” says Nathe Lawver. “They are.”

ORGANIZED LABOR TO HIGHLIGHT COMMUNITY SERVICE AT OCTOBER 1 EVENT

Tacoma, WA – Governor Christine Gregoire will join hundreds of union members from across the south Puget Sound region at the Hotel Murano in Tacoma on the evening of Thursday, October 1 to spotlight organized labor’s commitment to building stronger communities.

The event marks the culmination of the month-long South Sound Workers’ Food Drive, in which Local Unions in Pierce County have competed to collect the most food for families in need. Helen McGovern, Executive Director of the Emergency Food Network, will announce the total amount of food collected during the food drive, which is expected to surpass 20,000 lbs, and present the Golden Soup Can Award to the winning Union.

Other awards to be presented include the George Ginnis Award for Community Service and the George Meany Labor Scouting Award. Governor Christine Gregoire is the keynote speaker for the event and will be introduced by Tracey A. Thompson, Secretary-Treasurer of Teamsters Local 117.

Union rank-and-file members in attendance at the October 1 event will include nurses, bakers, boilermakers, public sector employees, as well as workers in the grocery, hotel, laundry, and steel industries, among others.
