DOC Appoints Acting Assistant Secretary for Community Corrections

OLYMPIA – The Secretary of the Department of Corrections today appointed an acting Assistant Secretary for the agency’s Community Corrections Division.

Anmarie Aylward, who has been with DOC for more than 20 years, will oversee the division that supervises more than 20,000 offenders who live in communities.

Aylward’s most recent position was program administrator at DOC headquarters where she managed the sex offender treatment program, chemical dependency treatment, reentry programs, education, religious services, family services and more.

Aylward also played a key role in implementing a program funded by Gov. Chris Gregoire that places GPS locators on high-risk Level 3 sex offenders.

“Anmarie is one of the most talented and respected administrators in the agency,” Secretary Eldon Vail said. “She is exactly the right person for this division as we implement the changes required by the 2009 legislature.”

A new law that went into effect July 26 requires DOC to use most of its resources to supervise the state’s highest-risk offenders. The agency will continue to supervise some low-risk offenders, including sex offenders and serious violent offenders. An offender’s risk to re-offend is calculated by a diagnostic tool developed by the Washington State Institute for Public Policy.

Aylward replaces Karen Daniels, who resigned.

“Karen brought stability to the Community Corrections Division at a time when that was most needed,” Vail said.

DOC will conduct a nationwide search for a permanent Assistant Secretary.
