On second thought, fire chiefs withdraw speaking invitation to Eyman

Back on July 28, the executive director for Washington fire chiefs association thought Tim Eyman would be a great draw as a speaker at the group's annual "No Secrets Symposium," and extended an invitation for the sponsor of Initiative 1033 to speak to his group, and the state Council of Firefighters.

(The event will be held this year on Oct. 28 at the Murano Hotel in downtown Tacoma).

"We co-host the No Secrets Symposium every year with the Washington State Council of Firefighters," executive director Mike Brown wrote in that July 28 e-mail. "I would like to invite you to make a presentation during this symposium on Wednesday, October 28, 2009. I would like to discuss the presentation with you, but I am thinking of something like a presentation on I -1033 and future initiatives you see that would be in the best interest of Washington State."

Alas, something made Brown change his mind and dis-invite Eyman. Today, Eyman found out why.

"We oppose the initiative!" Brown said.

Must be an association rule to never invite a speaker with whom one officially disagrees. Maybe they should change the name of the symposium from "No Secrets" to "Know Nothing."

Here. Read the e-mail train yourself. As always with e-mails, start at the bottom and work your way back up.

Thank you Tim! I will place you on the agenda for Wednesday, October 28, 2009 presenting from 10:30 until 12 noon. That should give you time to get to Chelan for your evening appointment.

The topic I suggested is my original email was “I-1033 and future Initiatives in the best interest of Washington State.” I could shorten it to be “I-1033 and the Future”. Will this title be OK?

Thanks again and I look forward to seeing you on October 28th. If you would like to discuss the presentation and the audience don’t hesitate to give me a call.

I have a little time but would like a commitment so we can market the symposium. You will be a good draw! Can you commit by August 20th. In the meantime I will show you as “invited”.

Tim did you receive the email indicating the symposium is at the Murano Hotel in Tacoma. Have you decided to join us and make the presentation on Wednesday, October 28th? The presentation I am suggesting is “I -1033 and the Future”. I have tentatively scheduled this presentation from 10:30 until 12 noon. What do you think?

I look forward to hearing from you.

Tim Eyman,

My name is Mike Brown and I am the Executive Director of the Washington Fire Chiefs. We co-host the No Secrets Symposium every year with the Washington State Council of Firefighters! I would like to invite you to make a presentation during this symposium on Wednesday, October 28, 2009. I would like to discuss the presentation with you, but I am thinking of something like a presentation on I -1033 and future initiatives you see that would be in the best interest of Washington State. The length of the presentation is open but I am thinking about 1 to 2 hours.

The audience will be Chief Fire Officers and Labor Leaders from across the State of Washington. Last year their were about 180 in attendance.

Please let me know if you are interested. I want to thank you in advance for your consideration.

Mike Brown
