I was out Friday, so I’m catching up with my e-mail. This arrived Friday.

Sen. Swecker recovering and ‘feeling great’ after open-heart surgery

OLYMPIA…State Sen. Dan Swecker, R-Rochester, is recovering and "feeling great" after undergoing open-heart surgery yesterday morning at Providence St. Peter Hospital in Olympia.

"I’m doing just great. I feel really good. It’s almost scary how good I feel," said Sen. Swecker late this morning. He said he felt miserable yesterday afternoon after waking up from surgery, but he felt better last evening. He added that he slept well overnight.

Swecker’s wife, Debby, said the surgery lasted nearly four hours. During the procedure, surgeons replaced the aorta valve in Dan Swecker’s heart. Debby Swecker said surgeons told her the operation was very successful.

"He’s doing just fabulous," Debby Swecker said. "He sat in his chair this morning. It seems like he’s doing really well. I’m so thankful that God helped bring him safely through this ordeal."

Sen. Swecker said he already can tell a difference in how his heart feels. "I can literally feel more blood flowing through my heart. It’s amazing how much better I feel in that regard, although I know I’ll still be very sore for the next few weeks from the procedure."

The Sweckers said they have read the many e-mails and get-well cards that have been sent since he was rushed by ambulance to the hospital Saturday night after fainting from a "cardiac episode."

"I’m very touched by the tremendous outpouring of concern and support from so many people," Dan Swecker said. "I appreciate everyone’s thoughts, prayers and best wishes. It really makes me and Debby feel good to know that so many people care."

Debby Swecker said they expect her husband to be released from the hospital Sunday afternoon.

"We’re looking forward to having him home again," she said.

"After undergoing hip replacement surgery last week and now open-heart surgery, I’m ready to stay away from the hospital for a while," Sen. Swecker joked. "Seriously, I appreciate the great care that the doctors and nurses at Providence St. Peter have provided me over the past week or two. They are a real blessing."
