No, Mr. President, it’s a VULCAN mind meld

I cringed when I read that President Obama said he can’t do a “Jedi mind meld” with Republicans to avoid the sequester.

As an original trekker, as we like to be called, I know that the Jedis of the “Star Wars” saga may have their mind tricks, but the Vulcans of “Star Trek” (such as Mr. Spock) are the ones who do the mind meld. In fact, that’s how Spock was able to be brought back to life after being killed off in one of the “Star Trek” movies.

One thing about the Vulcan mind meld I could never figure out: Why the finger on the side of the nose? Not sure how much brain tissue is in that vicinity.

Whatever, Obama needs to brush up on his sf analogies. I’m sure this will be a source of hilarity at the Emerald City Comicon this weekend. One of the featured guests happens to be Capt. Picard himself, Sir Patrick Stewart. Carrie Fisher (Leia in “Star Wars”) was scheduled to attend but has canceled.

Back when I was in Features, I had the good luck to interview “Star Trek” favorites James Doohan (Scotty) when he was visiting his daughter in Tacoma and George Takei (Sulu) at the top of the Space Needle. Both were delightful.
