The evolution of our civic agenda

Followers of this opinion section will see a familiar feature in today’s editorial page, our civic agenda.

The editorial board started running this in 1988 – ancient history, right? – to step up the consistency and discipline in our commentary. Rather than firing randomly as targets came into view, we figured we ought to put some methodical thought into a set of broad priorities that we’d keep in touch with through the course of the new year.

As I recall, this was the idea of our then-publisher, Bill Honeysett. It’s still going strong.

Updating the agenda annually forces us to keep revisiting and rethinking the big issues.

The five of us – David Zeeck, myself, Cheryl Tucker, Karen Peterson and Dale Phelps – start discussing the agenda issues early in December. We collectively think it through.

The writing, for some reason, has always fallen to me. I circulate drafts to the other board members, and we eventually come up with the big production you see about this time every year.
