A month ago, we ran a poignant last column from Pat Rigley, whose unexpected move back to California brought his gig as reader columnist to a premature end.

That was a disappointment. But I am delighted to announce that Ken Miller of Tacoma will take Rigley’s spot in the lineup of six rotating reader columnists whose work appears in our section on Mondays.

Miller, who was born in Brooklyn, is one of Tacoma’s great civic-minded citizens. He’s lived here since 1970 and has held leadership roles in the Tacoma Housing Authority, the American Leadership Forum, the YMCA, the Zoo Society and other community-strengthening organizations.

He’s also a published author, a fine writer and a close observer of Tacoma affairs. He’s been a contributor to our opinion pages, and I have spotted his musings in The New York Times. If he were running for office, he’d be rated “exceptionally well-qualified.” (He did run for the Tacoma City Council a few years back.)

Miller’s first column, running two days before the Fourth, is a contemplation of freedom, power and inalienable rights – and the American tendency to spin them into self-indulgence.

“Defending freedom isn’t just about loud or even big sticks,” he writes. “It’s also about making sure the few or the weak can exercise their inalienable rights. It’s about shoring up our sense of what we shouldn’t do. And defending freedom is about a conviction we’re all in this together.”

We’re proud to run this column and proud that Miller is joining us this year.
