City Club hosting editorial board endorsement interview

UPDATE: The full editorial board will participate: publisher/president David Zeeck, executive editor Karen Peterson, managing editor Dale Phelps, editorial page editor Patrick O’Callahan and me.

If you’re at all curious about The News Tribune editorial board’s interview process for candidate endorsements, the City Club of Tacoma has an event you might be interested in attending.

For the club’s June 6 program,  the editorial board will interview four of the five candidates for Pierce County assessor-treasurer: County Councilman Tim Farrell; former Tacoma City Councilmen Mike Lonergan and Spiro Manthou; and Billie O’Brien, administrative manager of the assessor-treasurer’s office. After our one-hour session, audience members will have time for their own questions.

Incumbent Dale Washam, who is also running, declined the invitation to be interviewed.

We know Washam isn’t interested in seeking our endorsement; from our editorials it’s clear he wouldn’t get it. We’ve already said that any of the other four candidates would be an improvement. But even when he was invited to take questions from audience members only, he still begged off.

We’re looking forward to the City Club event and the chance to give folks an idea of what keeps us so busy this time of year.
