Attorney General Rob McKenna, you might have heard, is running for a different office this year. And Secretary of State Sam Reed is retiring. But don’t worry about those offices; each has impressive candidates aspiring to fill them if our endorsement interviews are any indication.
On Thursday, we talked with the major-party secretary of state candidates – Democrats Jim Kastama, Greg Nickels and Kathleen Drew and Republican Kim Wyman. We’ll be endorsing two of them in the Aug. 7 primary.
We treat this as a party primary, even though the top two vote-getters, whatever their party, will advance to the Nov. 6 general election). So Wyman, the Thurston County auditor, will be our Republican choice as no other R’s are in the race. We’ll choose among the three Democrats for the second endorsement. It won’t be easy; all three are strong contenders in different ways.
We were also impressed with two attorney general candidates, King County Councilmen Bob Ferguson, D, and Reagan Dunn, R. Both have strong legal credentials and either would be a fine choice for voters.
We’ll make our endorsements in July, around the time ballots are mailed out (July 20).
