The case of the missing columnists

David Broder

Two of our regular syndicated columnists, David Broder and Kathleen Parker, have been MIA in recent weeks. We’re hoping both will be back, but we’re not sure.

Broder has been out sick, and his syndicate (Washington Post Writers Group) hasn’t given us any indication when he’ll be back. WPWG has been substituting Dana Milbank, whose column on the health care repeal runs Thursday. Milbank is pretty good, and we’d likely consider him as a replacement if Broder doesn’t return.

Parker is another matter. We suspended her column because when she started doing the “Parker Spitzer” show on CNN, she cut back to only one column a week instead of two. Only she wouldn’t cut her price. That got my “coupon-clipping, never-pay-retail” hackles up.

Kathleen Parker, Eliot Spitzer

We’ve talked about reviving her column if or when she leaves the CNN show – and the latter is looking more likely every day. Rumors are that she hasn’t been happy about being overshadowed by co-host Eliot Spitzer (yes, that Eliot Spitzer), and CNN reportedly hasn’t been overly impressed with Parker and wants to replace her. So she could be leaving the show any day now – and presumably would have time to write two columns a week again.

Here’s a New York Post article dishing a little background dirt on “Parker Spitzer.”

  1. Good for you. Her nonsense bothers me most of the time anyway.

Ms. Tucker, very nice editorial. But, and yes, the evil but, these folks warranted attention because they stopped providing columns due to other circumstances. At this point their worth was examined. Might want to go through the same analysis of others who are still providing opinion. Just saying.

Review of editorial columnists should be periodic, like employee evals. It seems that some of your syndicated columns have fallen into a rut. As the Ed Board stated recently, balance in view points is sought by the TNT. I am unclear on why turnover could not be tuned by the editors to maintain the balance.

Hooray, too, for the “coupon clipping” approach.

Thanks for the ongoing direct communications with readers of the paper, Cheryl.

I don’t know why Kathleen would be unhappy. She gets to say such important things as “We have to take a short break,” “Our next guest resides in Florida.” and “Hope you will join us again tomorrow.”

While you’re reviewing contributers, please consider replacing Eugene “Never Met A Good White Guy” Robinson. His steady drumbeat of Racism is tireing.
