Since 2000, we’ve reserved a spot on our Monday opinion page for contributions from a selected panel of four to six local reader columnists. Now it’s time to invite readers to apply for our 2011 roster of guest writers.

We are looking for contributors who represent the geographic and ethnic diversity of South Sound residents – urban, suburban and rural, young, old and in between. These columns must be personal or community-oriented, and based on firsthand experience or observation. Leave musings on national issues to our syndicated columnists.

To apply, readers should submit two freshly written sample columns (not previously written material), each 600 to 700 words. Include a cover letter telling us a bit about yourself. The deadline is Monday.

Only e-mail submissions will be considered. Send them to Articles must be pasted into the body of the e-mail; in addition, you may also attach them as Word documents.

Do I want to be a columnist?

No. No way! And sell my soul to the Editorial Board at the News Tribune? You must be kidding! The political spin factor is far too great. The lack of journalistic integrity is too large a hurdle. The constant drive to reveal only one side of the story without balance is far too ingrained in the myopic verbiage the Tribune chooses to publish.

    But, thanks for asking.

    Sincerely Yours

I enjoy reading the columns and I don’t feel that the guest columnists are pressured in any way to espouse a point of view that reflects the Tribune’s views.
