One of my jobs on the Opinionator desk is to lay out the daily pages and select art. As I was going through the photos out of Chile to find one to illustrate Thursday’s editorial about the rescued miners, I kept seeing images of the Chilean flag.

It looked real familiar . . . a lot like the Texas flag. And I know that from taking Texas history at Texas A&M Consolidated Junior High School in College Station, Texas. I don’t know if Texas schoolkids still have to know everything there is to know about Stephen F. Austin, Sam Houston and the Alamo, but we sure did back in 1963.

Anyway, the only difference between the flags of Texas and Chile is the size of the blue field on the left. Both flags apparently were inspired by the U.S. Stars and Stripes, but Chile’s was adopted 21 years before Texas’.
