Walter Backstrom – one of our Monday guest columnists last year – had a big day today. He wound up finishing 16th in the first round of The Washington Post’s “America’s Next Great Pundit” contest.

This is a big deal. The Post solicits 400-word sample columns from the entire country; Washington Post editors then pick their favorites. Now regular readers get to vote here on the finalists; the winner gets a three-month contract to write a weekly Washington Post column.

As a black conservative, Backstrom offers an unusual take on social problems. His highly ranked sample is a condensed version of a column he wrote for us in September.

If you’re a fan, you may want to cast a vote to keep him in the running.

Worked with Walter many years ago when he was going thru some rough times in his life.

I am really happy to see his unique developing talent – we used to be on the same side of the political fence – And even if we no longer are I think he has brought a view point on conservative thinking that those on the right need to consider seriously if they are to survive long term. I just cast my vote for him.

    Good Luck Walter!
