‘Parker Spitzer’ debuts on CNN

Kathleen Parker and Eliot Spitzer (Art Streiber/CNN)

Darn, I forgot to set my DVR to tape the debut of “Parker Spitzer” at 5 p.m. on CNN. If anyone who reads this tunes in, feel free to comment with a review.

The new show teams Kathleen Parker, a conservative-leaning, Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist whose work appears on The News Tribune opinion pages, and self-described “pragmatic liberal” Eliot Spitzer, who resigned two years ago as governor of New York after news broke that he had sex with call girls.

The early word is that Parker and Spitzer may be too polite to last long in the red-meat world of cable news networks. Their show is up against “Hardball” “Countdown” with Keith Olbermann on MSNBC and Bill O’Reilly’s “The O’Reilly Factor” on Fox News. Maybe those of us who have tired of the vitriol from both the right and the left will give “Parker Spitzer” a try.

UPDATE: An early review by Newsday’s Verne Gay calls the show’s premiere “near disastrous” and “a mess.”

Great, just what we need — more talking heads. And yet another “sharpy” conservative woman, and a former Democratic prosecuter who can’t keep it in his pants (great big giant eye-rolling sigh) to boot. Oh, brother!

To what extent does cable tv news, which is in large part infotainment, and its endless parade of shows like this one, influence the ‘legitimate’ media such as the news and editorial desks of newspapers? Surely, if a member of that newspaper spends time listening to these purveyors of polemicism, there will be some influence.

Yeah, yeah… I know…. you just want to hear all the different points of view. Except they’re not: it’s more of the same, shaded darker or lighter, dove-tailed into a consumer demographic for the purpose of selling advertisements to soap and car manufacturers.

Hardball is hosted by Chris Matthews, not Keith Olberman. Olderman’s show is “Coundown”

    make that “Countdown”:

Would a media refer to Larry Craig as the Senator that was caught up in a mensroom scandal if he was hosting a TV show on….oh….FOX?

    You’re right….shows how much cable TV I watch! It’s been fixed now…..cheryl

  7. Best line I’ve seen on Spitzer having a show “Ironic that CNN just paid for an hour with Elliot Spitzer.”

This being a family newspaper, I won’t go into the details of why that’s funny.

By the way, I like Parker’s columns so I hope she does well despite the pairing. We could use more thoughtful conservatives in punditry.

Oh, look at that- another CNN show that barely anyone will consciously watch. Yawn.
