The great debate debate

U.S. Rep. Norm Dicks (6th District) gets a knock here from the Wall Street Journal for campaign debate-evasion.

This isn’t a new, startling or scandalous phenomenon – though Dicks certainly shouldn’t be invoking spurious legislative obligations, if the WSJ has it right.

Sitting-pretty incumbents are never eager to roll the dice by sharing a forum with their challengers. What’s in it for them? They’ve got little to gain, and challengers trying to close the gap have little to lose. And if they get shut out, they’ve got the “Why is my opponent afraid to debate me?” line.

Same thing’s going on in the 8th District Dave Reichert vs. Suzan DelBene race – in that case with a Republican incumbent and a Democratic challenger.

This is “forum” is such a sham. Did you read the article on it? “Incumbent U.S. Rep. Dicks didn’t commit to forum, spokeswoman says”

  2. JoshKinder says:

Norm said he had to go back to DC to work on the continuing resolution. Norm is a senior member of the House Appropriations Committee (could be Appropriations Chairman next year) – that is totally legitimate. And Norm did have votes last week. The whole “debate” was such a farce! How can you dodge a debate you never committed to attend?

From Mr. Fund’s piece in the WSJ: “You’d think he’d be eager to tout all he has done for his Tacoma district, but this past Monday he pulled out of a debate with his GOP opponent after the local newspaper had announced he would attend.”

Funny. Mr Fund assumes the worst without checking the facts. It’s nearly as egregious as the CCCC in Sequim advertising a debate without bothering to get a confirmation from both candidates.

  4. PumainTacoma says:

Dicks dodged a debate. One, two, three many… He is running AWAY from office and can not attend any debates that do not MESS with his hoity toity schedule!!! Kick the bums out of office. Enough excuses. He works for me. PERIOD.

  5. headedsouth says:

The CCCC is a right-wing bunch of goons in Clallam County who set this up for Dicks to look bad. Check out their web site. I called Dicks office prior to this event and they said he was not confirmed, maybe the CCCC should have done the same thing. Too bad your candidate Doug Cloud is not even good enough for Karl Rove’s group to dump millions of dollars on like they are for Jamie Herrera down in the 3rd Cong Dist.

When our State gets in trouble or needs help, who do they turn to…Norm Dicks. Lets not fool ourselves here people, Norm is not the problem, it is the system. And now all the “angry” people that did not feel the Change in 2008 was good enough want to swing the pendulum back the other way. Good luck with that. You want at least one worthy person fighting for you and that person is Norm Dicks. Cloud is a whistleblower chasing lawyer who can be bought for the right price.
