Seattle Times disses Reichert

In something of a shocker, the Seattle Times didn’t endorse incumbent Congressman Dave Reichert for re-election in the 8th District. The paper even referred to the non-endorsement as an “unusual step.”

Instead the Times editorial board came out today for Democrat Suzan DelBene, whom we also endorsed along with Reichert, and Republican Tim Dillon, a Yarrow Point City Council member whom we didn’t meet (he had a schedule conflict).

Here’s our endorsement.

The Times’ editorial was fairly scathing, saying “Reichert opposed financial reform, but was unable to explain what he did or did not like about the legislation. The 8th District deserves someone who is faster on their feet.” It also faulted him for voting against a new small-business lending fund and for taking “cynical” environmental votes. Also, this:

On issues ranging from the wars to the economy, three-term Republican incumbent Reichert is unstudied and comes up short. After six years in office, this is unacceptable.

The Times editorial says that at an appearance before a gathering of GOP precinct committee officers, Reichert “explained that while he toes the party line most of the time, a few select environmental votes were ‘certain moves, chess pieces, strategies’ he used to keep environmental groups from trying to defeat him. The moment was revealing. This page’s response then and now is ‘how cynical.'”
