Bill Hall’s close call

Our Saturday columnist, Bill Hall – one of the nicest people I’ve never met in person but have had a long-running e-mail relationship with – came perilously close to going to that big newsroom in the sky.

In his column tomorrow, he writes about going into cardiac arrest last week as he was about to be operated on for a “tattered gall bladder.” He was airlifted 100 miles to Spokane for heart surgery. Everything turned out OK and he’s recuperating. I sent him this note upon receiving his column:

Wow! I’m so glad you’re doing well, Bill. Kudos to your surgeon. I would not want to have to break it to your TNT fans that your column would not be running anymore.

However, I’m trained to look for holes in stories. So, whatever happened to the tattered gall bladder? Cheryl

Bill’s reply:

They buttoned me back up without going after the gall bladder. I’m on blood thinners for six weeks and then we’ll go for the old bag again.

Thanks for the kind words. I would miss our association. But the news is mostly good. The heart was undamaged. The clogged artery is opened, and the surgeon says I’m back to where I had assumed I was, looking at a couple more decades of breathing and of knowing people like you. BH

Readers who’d like to drop Bill a get-well note can reach him at wilberth@cableone.net or 1012 Prospect Ave., Lewiston, ID 83501.

Bill and I have exchanged civil, but “interesting” notes before. Evidently, I’m an Ilk of some sort…. LOL… Get well, Bill, I’d miss you making my blood boil… <[:-)~

I am a huge fan and look forward each Saturday to Mr. Hall’s latest take on the quirks of life. His columns are just delightful. I look forward to reading many, many more.

  3. Gadzooks, shows you I’m not a real reader of the paper. I thought he’d died years ago. A column he wrote back in 1982 became a catch-phrase between my dad and I for years. I’ve now taught it to other people. It’s “purring on the phone.” As in, the way people talk on the phone when they miss each other, and can’t be together, and don’t have anything newsworthy to say. They just purr at each other about nonsense. He noticed his teenage daughter doing it, and wrote a column about it. Struck a chord with my Dad and I. Bill, glad you’re not dead yet. Keep cranking ‘em out, and maybe I’ll pick up a paper on a Saturday now and then.

Cheryl, thanks for the update. Bill Hall is the most enjoyable columnist since Art Buchwald. He’s going to have some interesting new material to talk about.

Best wishes, Bill, for a full recovery.
