Is Newsweek cover sexist?

shortsI’m not a big Sarah Palin fan, but I’m on her side in thinking that the Newsweek cover photo of her in shorts is inappropriate.

I just don’t buy the Newsweek line that the photo, originally taken for Runner’s World magazine, was
“the most interesting image available to us to illustrate the theme of the cover.” Most provocative, yes. But I think it’s dismissive of a person who, like her or not, deserves more respect.

That said, she looks great.

Anyone else have thoughts on the cover?

  1. Palin eschews much of the worst of right wing politics and she has not yet shown the ability to serve as president, should that possibility arise.

However she deserves respect for her tackling corruption within her own party – corruption that no doubt overlaps with our own in Washington State.

Frankly, I’d rather see a bunch of honest extremists, right and left, than the thieving folks we’ve got dominating the center right now – just so long as they all respect everyone’s right to disagree and can come to compromises – when it really matters.

Kinda like the good old Clinton years!

  2. favoredandblessed says: don’t see Joe Biden on the front in shorty shorts. I bet sold a lot of magazines, might get Newsweek out of the red.

  3. How is the photo sexist? She dresses herself doesn’t she? She posed for the picture, didn’t she? She knew that the picture was for a magazine that is seen and read by people from throughout the world didn’t she? Had she been in a sweat-stained sweat suit would it have been improper to show that she perspires? Come on!
Maybe they would like it better if she were just ignored completely. Now THAT’S an idea who’s time has come!

    I don’t buy Newsweek’s line either.

“… illustrate the theme of the cover” ?

Unless the answer to the question “How do you solve a problem like Sarah?”
is to go jogging, it doesn’t hold much water.

There are definitely compelling arguments that the use of this photo is both biased and sexist. Though I don’t completely agree with all that, I do find it pathetic.

It is well known that Newsweek is struggling to be profitable. This just a desperate act to sell product. It proves that instead of a creditable weekly news magazine it should be sold off the impulse rack at the grocery store with the other trash mags.

  5. sez it all…ultimate fail.

We defend Sarah Palin against misogynist smears not because we endorse her or her politics, (we think they’re bad for the country) but because that’s how feminism works.

  6. Yes, looks great!
