Keven Rojecki’s campaign for Tacoma City Council is worthy of a congressional race: Very well-funded and professional in every respect. His opponent, Metro Parks Commissioner Victoria Woodards, looks thoroughly outmatched.
Rojecki has not been particularly visible in Tacoma, but he’s developed all kinds of connections on the state level as a lobbyist and leader of the Washington State Council of Firefighters. The governor has appointed him to the state Gambling Commission.
For a guy we haven’t seen much of, he’s got a stunning list of endorsements, including the blessing of state Democratic leaders, the Sierra Club and recently Congressman Adam Smith. (Gotta love that sleek Web site of his.) When we see a campaign like this, we tend to assume the candidate is ultimately gunning for a higher office.
One possible chink in his armor: Woodards’ support is distinctively Tacoma-based. She’s lined up the likes of Mayor Bill Baarsma, state Reps. Jeannie Darneille and Dennis Flannigan, and state Sen. Debbie Regala.
And this is, after all, a race for a Tacoma council seat.
