Way to go, Mariners

Writing today’s editorial about the Seattle Mariners’ surprisingly strong start, it was hard to keep my fan enthusiasm under wraps. After all, my fondest sports memory, next to seeing my Florida Gators beat favored Ohio State for the 2007 national championship, was watching the Mariners clinch something or other back in the ’90s.

My memory is a little fuzzy as to what exactly they clinched. Division title, maybe?

Anyway, it was amazing. My sister, brother-in-law, two little nieces and I were bad dancing on our seats at the very top of the Kingdome – and I mean VERY top. We were in the absolute last row, but we still had a lot of fun.

More proof of what a Mariners geek I am:

&bull On my bulletin board here at work is my giant ticket to the “Mariners Kingdome Finale” (June 27, 1999) vs. Texas. And yes, I also have the T-shirt commemorating the last Mariners game in the wretched Kingdome.

&bull At spring training several years ago, Edgar Martinez was walking by the stands and I yelled out, “EDGAR! You’re my favorite Mariner!”

That stopped him in his tracks. He was completely speechless, just giving me a puzzled look.(I can’t believe that was the first time he had heard that!) He’s STILL my favorite, and I have the faded-out poster hanging in my garage to prove it.
