Iraq war: legal or illegal?

Protest 7.jpgAssistant Prof. Seth Weinberger of the University of Puget Sound argues in today’s Insight section that the war in Iraq is perfectly legal – contrary to the claims of many of its critics.

We get no end of letters demanding that President Bush be impeached because he started an “illegal” war. This has almost become a mantra of the war’s opponents, including Fort Lewis’ Lt. Ehren Watada, who’s facing court martial for refusing to deploy to Iraq.

Questions: If Weinberger’s argument is wrong, exactly how is it wrong? If he’s right – and the war is legal – how does that change the debate? Does it make a difference?
