We just got word from the governor’s office that Doug MacDonald, Washington’s transportation secretary, is leaving his job in July. Here’s his letter of resignation.DOUG MCDONALD.jpg

MacDonald, known for his frank talk and somewhat quirky personality, has been largely credited with returning credibility to the state Department of Transportation. The 62-year-old has been losing his eyesight for years due to diabetes, although there is no indication that’s the reason behind his departure. (His driver’s license expired last year because he couldn’t pass the vision test).

During our visit with him Wednesday, MacDonald had to take off his glasses and hold a piece of paper up to his nose to be able to read it, but that didn’t seem like a change. He could hardly contain his excitement while brainstorming ideas for the opening ceremony for the new Narrows bridge, which should happen sometime in July. That excitement makes even more sense now — the bridge opening is not just a celebration of a major milestone in the $800 million project, it also will be MacDonald’s swan song.
