No love for taxes

The ed page crew is heading home at 11 p.m., with three fresh election-night editorials on the page. The U.S. Senate is still a toss-up.

Two local tax measures sure took a beating. Tacoma’s road levy only needed 50 percent to pass, but got only 48 percent. University Place’s parks-and-sidewalks levy really got pounded, with only 38 percent approval. I think there’s message there for city officials. Our ed board will be pondering that Wednesday.

Another thought: It looks like Pierce County will be using instant runoff voting to choose its first elected sheriff since1990. That’s going to be mighty interesting. The county prosecutor and judges will still go through primary elections, because they are consider extensions of state government. But now the sheriff as well as the county executive, county council members, the auditor and the assessor will be selected via IRV in the November general election.
