Plan your Memorial Day observances with this look at the weekend’s events

A busy weekend of Memorial Day events is just around the corner in Pierce and Thurston counties. Here’s a look at the weekend’s ceremonies culled from community groups, Joint Base Lewis-McChord and the Washington Department of Veterans Affairs.

Sunday

  • Key Peninsula Veterans Aisle of Honor, 1 p.m., VaughnBayCemetery, the cemetery is located at the corner of 100th Street Kp N and 186th Avenue Kp N, Vaughn. 253-884 9852. Signs will be posted from State Route 302. The formal ceremony begins about 1 p.m., but flags will be on display from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.

* The 20th annual Veterans Day ceremony at the capitol war memorials features music and remarks from guest speakers, including Mike Gregoire. The ceremony starts at the Vietnam War Memorial on the state capitol campus at noon. For more information, go to www.dva.wa.gov.

* Puyallup’s Veterans Day celebration kicks off at 7 p.m. at the pavilion in Pioneer

Former lawmaker aims to raise money for veterans’ funerals

The melancholy notes of “Taps” ring out at many military funerals, but former state Sen. Ken Jacobsen fears too many veterans are missing a final honor they’ve earned.

He submitted a bill last year to compel the state Department of Veterans Affairs to hire buglers that would be available to perform at every veterans’ funeral, but it didn’t pass the Legislature.

He’s taking a different approach with a Memorial Day fundraiser called “Taps for Taps” at Seattle’s Ravenna Alehouse.

“Only 12.2 percent of Washington’s deceased veterans receive a live performance of ‘Taps’ at their funeral,” Jacobsen said in a news

JBLM soldiers to participate in Puget Sound Memorial Day ceremonies

Service members from Joint Base Lewis-McChord plan to attend Memorial Day ceremonies throughout the South Sound this weekend. The base is hosting its own event Monday and visitors will be able to get day passes to attend it.

Washington soldiers say “Merry Christmas” from Afghanistan and far-flung locales

Holiday greetings are coming to Washington families from service members stationed in three continents.

The Defense Department this week released a series of 20-second videos from Washington soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines. Their holiday messages come from the likes of Afghanistan, Kuwait, Germany, Japan, Iraq, South Korea and Djibouti. Here’s a greeting from a Joint Base Lewis-McChord unit saying hi from one of Saddam Hussein’s palaces.

Veteran wall dedicated on Independence Day at Tacoma park

Local veterans groups will dedicate their third memorial wall at Tacoma’s War Memorial Park on Sunday, using the holiday to draw attention to the granite tiles filled with the names of Pierce County residents who have served in the U.S. military.

The dedication event will start at 1 p.m. on the east end of the park, at Sixth Avenue and MacArthur Street, near the new Tacoma Narrows Bridge.
