UW doctor working with Army to rethink pain treatment for veterans

A push to rethink pain treatment for soldiers and veterans aims for fewer pill prescriptions and a varied approach to easing chronic suffering among patients at Madigan Army Medical Center.
The hospital south of Tacoma last week hosted a summit to spread the word, building on a pain reduction initiative from the Army Surgeon General.
The forum followed the Army’s disclosure of a report that said up to 35 percent of wounded soldiers in so-called warrior transition units are dependent on prescription and illegal drugs.

Golf course dedicates putting green for POW/MIA

The American Lakes Veterans Golf Course on Friday plans to remember prisoners of war and soldiers who remain missing in action by dedicating a new nine-hole putting green in their honor. The ceremony coincides with national POW/MIA Recognition Day.

It’s been a busy year at the golf course with the completion of a new Rehabilitation and Training Center and an ongoing campaign to build nine more holes. It’s used by veterans and military personnel, and by patients at hospitals that serve them.

Wounded warriors a year away from new quarters

By next spring, hundreds of injured, wounded and chronically ill soldiers at Joint Base-Lewis McChord are expected to have a new place to live, recuperate and plan their futures. The Army holds a groundbreaking ceremony today for its $52 million Warrior Transition Battalion barracks complex.

Two new apartment-style buildings will hold units for a total of up to 408 soldiers. Each member of the battalion will have a private bedroom and share a bathroom and kitchenette with one other soldier, as they do now. Getting around will be easier, thanks to the elevators, and the atmosphere will be more comfortable,
