Coming home is great, but some soldiers are still leaving home

National media attention the last few days has fastened on the return of troops from overseas, with everyone from CNN to the NBC Nightly News doing stories on Joint Base Lewis-McChord’s 4th Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division — the last major combat brigade out of Iraq.

We, too, have written extensively about the 18,000 troops that are coming home to the South Puget Sound this year.

Perhaps lost in all this is the fact that smaller groups of soldiers are still headed into harm’s way.

51st Signal Battalion returning to Lewis

More than 400 soldiers from the 51st Signal Battalion are returning to Fort Lewis this weekend after a yearlong deployment to Iraq.

The unit, headquartered at Joint Base Balad, provided tactical communications network for Multi-National Corps-Iraq, which runs daily American military operations. The unit also managed tactical communications for 37 bases and outposts across Iraq.

The battalion also provided command and control access across all of Iraq, installed 4,000 computers on military networks, established more than 6,000 user accounts and installed more than 100 miles of fiber-optic cable.
