Injured JBLM soldier wins two medals at Warrior Games

An injured soldier from Castle Rock met one of his last goals as he prepares to leave the Army when he cleaned up at the Warrior Games this month, earning two medals in the annual athletic competition for veterans.

Sgt. Josh Andrew, 26, won a gold medal for the shot put and a silver for his discus throw.

He’s assigned to Joint Base Lewis-McChord’s Warrior Transition Battalion, where he is receiving treatment for repeated knee injuries he sustained on deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as for concussions he suffered from explosions in combat.

Army honors JBLM Green Beret for saving lives at war, building up rural clinics

Veteran JBLM special operator recognized for combat valor with Silver and Bronze stars

A veteran special operator at Joint Base Lewis-McChord today received the nation’s third highest medal for combat valor, two years after he took control of a faltering mission that ultimately led to the deaths of more than 1oo insurgents and helped NATO destroy entrenched enemy bunkers in western Afghanistan.

Master Sgt. Michael Hunter, 35, not only received the Silver Star for that April 2010 raid. Today he also received a Bronze Star for a June 2010 mission in which he delivered medical assistance to two wounded soldiers during a 16-hour firefight.

Army Rangers to be honored at public event Thursday

The Army Ranger battalion based at Joint Base Lewis-McChord will take another rare turn in the public spotlight at the Tacoma Dome at 6 p.m. on Thursday evening, May 10.

Rangers with the 2nd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment will be presented with military awards for combat actions.

The public is welcome to attend the event at the exhibition hall inside the dome.

In addition to the individual awards, the battalion will receive two unit awards for their role in combat operations in Afghanistan and Iraq in the summer of 2005. One operation resulted in the capture of a terrorist leader

Nine years after the fact, a Purple Heart is given

A Tacoma man who was wounded in Iraq will receive his Purple Heart nearly nine years late in a ceremony Tuesday at Joint Base-Lewis McChord.

Marine Corps veteran Kenneth McAllister will be presented with the nation’s oldest military decoration for combat wounds he suffered on April 1, 2003, while serving in Iraq with a 1st Marine Division tank battalion based at Camp Pendleton, Calif.

McAllister joined the Marines in 2000 and was honorably discharged in 2004 with the rank of lance corporal. Last August he contacted the Tacoma office of U.S. Sen. Maria Cantwell asking for help getting the Purple
