The Joint Base Lewis-McChord soldier who was killed by an enemy bomb Saturday might have died in an insider attack carried out with a suicide vest, according to reports in the Tampa Bay Times and The New York Times.

Spc. Brittany Gordon, 24, reportedly died with an American contractor, the deputy intelligence director for Kandahar providence, two of his bodyguards and another Afghan intelligence employee.

Republican Rep. Bill Young of Florida told the Tampa Bay Times that Gordon was killed in a suicide attack.

“It is not one that was planted as a mine. The person was wearing a suicide vest. This is also considered an IED,”  Young, who chairs the House defense appropriations subcommittee, told the newspaper.

News releases from the Defense Department and Joint Base Lewis-McChord said only that Gordon was killed with an improvised explosive. In the past, some Defense Department news releases have indicated whether fatal  improvised explosives were buried in roads or worn on vests.

Reports are conflicting about whether the attack was carried out by an Afghan intelligence agent, or by someone posing as one. Here’s a rundown of them at Long War Journal.

AFP reports that the attack was carried out by an Afghan intelligence soldier who had been working for the government for eight years.

Here are the key paragraphs from AFP:

“It was a suicide bomb attack that was carried out by one of our own staff,” a senior member of the National Directorate of Security (NDS) told AFP on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the media.

Nato’s US-led International Security Assistance Force (Isaf) confirmed the bombing was by an Afghan agent.

“I can confirm that one of the members of the NDS detonated a suicide vest that day in Maruf, Kandahar,” Major Adam Wojack, an Isaf spokesman, told AFP.

“But at this time we can’t confirm that it was an insider attack aimed at coalition forces,” he said. “We’re investigating.”

Afghanistan’s Khaama Press reports that the attack was not a green on blue killing. A spokesman for the National Directorate of Security told Khaama that killer not an intellgence employee, though he was wearing government uniform.
