More than 3,000 South Sound area military retirees or their beneficiaries are expected to attend Friday’s annual appreciation event at Joint Base Lewis-McChord.

They are invited to get health services such as blood sugar and cholesterol testing; they can receive information about medical, dental and other benefits; they can update or replace identification cards or on-base vehicle registrations; they can seek legal assistance; and they can visit booths to learn about veterans’ resources in the community.

Some individuals may want to explore a review of their veterans’ benefits, especially in light of recent changes in federal law that expand benefits for some retirees with service-connected disabilities.

The keynote speaker is Col. Karen O’Brien, deputy commander for clinical services at Madigan Army Medical Center. She will give remarks at 12:20 p.m.

The event at the base south of Tacoma runs from 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Hangar 9 on McChord Field.

For more information, such as what paperwork is needed for certain services, call Lewis-McChord’s Retirement Services Office at (253) 966-5881 or 966-5884. You can also visit the office’s website.
