The Army Ranger battalion based at Joint Base Lewis-McChord will take another rare turn in the public spotlight at the Tacoma Dome at 6 p.m. on Thursday evening, May 10.

Rangers with the 2nd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment will be presented with military awards for combat actions.

The public is welcome to attend the event at the exhibition hall inside the dome.

In addition to the individual awards, the battalion will receive two unit awards for their role in combat operations in Afghanistan and Iraq in the summer of 2005. One operation resulted in the capture of a terrorist leader and another led to the rescue of a U.S. service member and recovery of the bodies of several military personnel.

Five Rangers also will be honored for rescuing two trapped mountain climbers on Mount McKinley in Alaska in May 2011.

Rangers from the battalion returned earlier this year from Afghanistan, the battalion’s 14th combat deployment since October 2001. Four Rangers were killed and several more were wounded during the deployment.

In that ten-year period, the battalion says it has conducted more than 2,500 raids and captured or killed thousands of key Al-Qaeda, Taliban and other insurgent leaders.

The battalion held the event last year at Stadium High School, its first post-deployment awards ceremony to take place in a public setting. Rangers said at the time they hope the appearance will help the public get a better understanding of the Special Operations.

Although based at Lewis-McChord, the battalion takes its orders from Special Operations Command in Tampa, Fla. The Rangers’ movements are kept confidential. Lewis-McChord doesn’t announce its deployments or its homecomings, as it does for other units at the base.
