A Joint Base Lewis-McChord artillery regiment is expected to come home from its yearlong deployment in Iraq very early Wednesday morning.

Soldiers in the 5th Battalion, 5th Air Defense Artillery regiment were deployed to 15 different locations in Iraq, from Mosul in the north to Basra in the south. About 280 of them will be back at Lewis-McChord’s Wilson Gym at 3 a.m., Wednesday.

The battalion has deployed to Iraq twice before its most recent mission.

On its third tour, the battalion operated a Counter-Rocket, Artillery and Mortar system, known as C-RAM. The system integrates sensors, loudspeakers and weaponry to detect, alert and protect coalition forces from enemy fire, according to military officials. The battalion also had the ability to intercept and destroy incoming indirect fire.

The battalion lost one soldier in last Iraq mission. Sgt. Brandon Maggart was killed Aug. 22 when insurgents attacked his unit in Basra.
